How To Get Out Of A Funk

how to get out of a funk

You know the feeling?

Not sure what exactly is wrong. You just aren’t feeling it. Whatever it is.

We have all been here. Staring this feeling down and just hoping we snap out of it sooner rather than later.

I tend to feel this way during the winter months. Cold weather is not my idea of a good time. Neither is being trapped inside the house.

Sometimes, a funk can happen when you are getting ready to jump into something new. Or when making any type of decision that causes you to feel scared or nervous. You start to feel stuck. And then like a car that runs out of gas you just stall out.

But a funk does not discriminate. It can happen at any time. It will pop up out of nowhere. Waving at you through the window like that chatty neighbor that you try to avoid but just can’t. You can close the blinds but it will still be there.

Don’t just brush these feelings off.

It can be easy to look at our situation and think we should just suck it up and be happy. But that kind of thinking does not solve any deeper issues. It just causes you to push the “bad” feelings way down inside. And plaster a smile on your face so the world doesn’t know.

Call it a funk, a rut, a slump or the feeling of staring down a dead end. Let’s work on pressing the brakes and doing a U-turn.

Here Are 14 Ways to Help You Get Out of a Funk

1) Sleep

Are you getting enough sleep?

Being consistently exhausted will take a toll on you.

A full night’s sleep can make me feel like a new person. In the same way a lack of sleep makes me feel and look like a puffy-faced zombie.

It is not always possible to get enough sleep every single night. But for me, it is a simple thing to evaluate and make the necessary changes.

Go to bed. Some things can wait until tomorrow.

2) Food

Have you been eating like a teenage boy?

Man do I love some junk food. But when it is not balanced out with some actual nutritional food I feel horrible.

If breakfast was donuts and dinner was potato chips then that could have something to do with feeling not so great. I have been guilty of chips for dinner a time or two. Oops.

What we put into our bodies really does matter! A lot! So try to give your body some good fuel.

Oh, and water of course! Drink water all day every day!

3) Get organized

Do you have a lot going on? Most of us have more than a few things on our plates. It can get overwhelming.

And this can be made even worse when there is actual clutter around us.

Try making a list of things you want to organize. This can be getting your house in order or just doing a brain dump of your thoughts which can clear some space out in your mind.

I wrote an article with 7 steps to organize your home that will help you get organized in no time!

Lists are also perfect for having everything out there in front of you. These visuals can help you prioritize.

4) Read a book

I am a big fan of books. And I truly believe that books have the power to change your life.

Don’t like to read? Listen to a podcast.

I love the way another person’s words can make us feel like anything is possible. And it can be the kick in the behind we need to snap out of a fog.

This book is currently on my nightstand. I am only halfway through and it is definitely going on my list of favorites.

5) What have you done for yourself lately?

It is easy to laugh off the need for self-care. But let’s not just brush it off like it is not a big deal.

You are a human being. You have needs and wants.

If you are constantly giving and taking care of others, you will have nothing left. And that is bad for you and for those around you.

Here are 10 simple self-care ideas you should start doing today!

6) Get your dance on

Fake it til you make it. Find some feel-good songs and put those babies on repeat. Sing and dance your little heart out. Heck, pretend your version of the song is better than the original!

Schedule a one-woman dance party into your day!

My friend uses the Echo Dot and it makes it so easy. One sentence and hello music!

7) Help!

It is OK to ask for some help.

And there are times when it is exactly what you need to do.

Do not multitask your days away. Do not let stress take over.

Everyone needs a little help every now and then.

8) Get outside

OK, it is not always possible to get outdoors. I’m looking at you snow and rain.

But any change of scenery can help with changing your mindset. The point is to just get out of the house.

New walls and new faces can work wonders.

9) Switch things up

Ever feel like you are just going through the motions? This can be so boring and yet so draining at the same time.

Try something different. Something out of the usual. This may mean going outside of your comfort zone just a tad.

Just try to be open to new welcoming new experiences into your life.

10) Friend date

Nothing beats some real talk with a good friend. Add in some coffee or some wine and you are set. A  feelings purge is good for the soul.

Do not underestimate the power of a good old venting session.

Writing out your goals is great for holding yourself accountable.

12) Journal

This can be a great way to have a therapy session with yourself. Write out how you are feeling. Write things you are grateful for. Just start writing and see where it goes.

Grab a journal and go to town! Need some help getting started? Read this!

13) Take a mental health day

Have a good ugly cry. I am a big supporter of an ugly cry.

You do not have to run away from the feelings inside of you. Confront them. Let yourself feel all the things. And then you are more prepared to start moving in a better direction.

Also, this is great for evaluating if this rut you are in is actually something a little deeper.

14) Personal mantra

Find a personal mantra you love.

Now repeat it over and over.

Put it on a post-it and stick it on a mirror.

Positive self-talk may sound cheesy but do it anyway. I will always stand behind putting positivity out into the world.

Women have a habit of setting unrealistic expectations for themselves. And we make excuses for why that is OK. When the truth is it is not OK.

We are the ones who suffer from this. It is like carrying a heavy basket on our heads all the time. And you know what? We can usually handle it like a boss. But it is crucial to understand that we don’t have to ALWAYS be on it.

You are allowed to put that heavy basket down every now and then.

The world will not crumble if you take off the superhero cape. Everything will not spiral out of control if you put your needs front and center.

You can put that cape back on at any time, friend!

You can still be living your best life through all the ups, downs, and in-betweens.

So, take a small step or even a tiny step in the right direction. Climb out of the rut. Tell that funk that has been all up in your business to take a hike.

Tomorrow is a brand spanking new day! You got this!
